lyrics

Sacred Games

Build a hotel on my land
And you better build trenches too
Build a hotel on my land
You better build trenches too
There’s poison in the lido
And snipers in the trees
Why don’t Christians pray for amputees

From cruise liner to bin liner
But what I’ve got left I like
From Michelin star to diner
But what I’ve got left I like
We’re honest in our deeds
We wear our hearts on our sleaze
Yet why don’t Christians pray for amputees

I crossed a picket line to see you crucified
And I couldn’t stop vomiting flowers
I couldn’t stop vomiting flowers
And I died in nobody’s arms
Like petals fell your charms.

I’m not the night porter in the hotel of your lies
I drank of holy water and it drizzled down my thighs
Way too many blue notes in this symphony of sighs
I learned that “convicted” ain’t synonymous with “wise”.

The sprats are marinating in red diesel
While matryoshka grin as one from a tenement easel
That balalaika version of The Carnival Is Over
Is the most depressing thing I’ve ever heard - and believe me I’ve written a few

Freezing rain carved up in sheets
Cruel and deliberate knives of sleet
Those Were The Days on calliope
Is a twisted gesture bereft of hope
- Please let’s make the world anew

Face stiffened in the brittle Baltic breeze
My breathing shallow with Brexit disease
Ra Ra Rasputin refusing to die
As I poke pierogi ‘round the plate with a sigh
- I just wanna be close to you

I just wanna be close to you
As close as a matryoshka is to its ilk
As close as a moth is to its silk
My tears a spray of January Baltic brine
Spell out in a puddle “please won’t you be mine”.
